It feel as if March and April have arrived plus autumn windfall!

I am also taking bookings with deposits for the Christmas Meal on 29th November at the Woodman and also need to know if you are coming to the Christmas Social on December 11th . Both these events are open to members, volunteers and partners.

The AGM is on 27th November. Please attend if you possibly can.

Firstly thanks to all who came to Steve Waddingham’s talk. Lovely to have a great turnout for a really good evening.

A huge thankyou for the way membership renewals are coming in. Keep them coming before the year ends please.

Wednesday 29th we look forward to 37 of us enjoying fellowship and good food at the Woodman AL9 7TT at 7.00 for 7.30. Please pay for your own party’s meals  and drinks and service. I will meet you at the bar entrance.

! Do need to know who is coming to the social on 11th December by next Tuesday please. We have fun quizes, live music, light refreshments , Christmas hats, jumpers and a chance to give any Christmas cards to save on post.

Museum will be closed after Tuesday 19th December until Tuesday 2nd January.

Autojumble is on 7th January. Come earlly for bargains and even earlier  if you have a stall.  Bacon rolls are excellent.  Please park off site.

8th January Society Meeting is 1.45-3.15.  I will notify you of the programme after Christmas.

Dear Members

I hope this finds you in good spirits despite the rain.  We could be much worse off than so many areas which have such dreadful flooding.  Just a bit if surface water here and there.

A few reminders and some new items as we look ahead.
October 23rd  8.00: Gary Fisher is giving an illustrated talk on The Gunpowder Plot.
This should be very interesting so please come along if you possibly can. 

October 24th-29th is half term so we hope to be busy on Tuesday. 
Please assist by parking off site unless in a classic.

Sunday 29th Is Open Day with a visit from the steel rods and there are 55 promised. 
Should be a terrific display.  Again, please park off-site.
 
Saturday 4th November 10-3.30 A chance to see the veteran vehicles participating in the
Brighton Run in Malborough Road next to St James’ Palace.

Sunday November 12th there is the pre-booked visit to The St Albans Organ Theatre. 
Please be there by 2.45. Lesley has the tickets.

Monday November 13th 8.00pm. Steve Waddingham will be giving a talk on Aston Martins. 
Hope he will have a good turn-out.

Friday 17th November Nomination forms and any items for discussion at the AGM should be in.

Saturday 25th November: Rock’n’roll Night  in the annexe. A great evening fundraiser.
Tickets £12.00.

Monday 27th November 8.00p.m. AGM Please come if you possibly can. It is your Society and a chance to hear about the work of the EDVVT. Members only.

Wednesday 29th November Christmas Meal for Members, Volunteers and partners.
A carvery meal at the Woodman 21 Warrengate North Mymms AL9 7TT at 7.00 for 7.30.
The meal is £17.95 a head. Desserts are additional if you have room! Deposit of £5 per head to secure your places. Please give to Judith by Tuesday 21st November. (Cash only)

Monday 11 th December Society Social: open to members, volunteers and partners: a relaxed evening with light festive refreshments and entertainment. Also the special Christmas Raffle.

In the new year we will have alternate afternoon and evening meetings on the second and fourth
Mondays respectively through January, February and March. That way we hope we can see more of you at meetings. These will not be repeat programmes so if you can come to both, please do so.

Mike Pierce is organising a weekend rally to Aylesbury for the weekend after Easter 2024 and is
collecting names and deposits now. Should be great.

I hope you are enjoying this amazing weather and keeping the classics out and about. I saw a few interesting cars on my way to Potters Bar this morning.  Not sure where they were going but maybe just enjoying a drive.

Just wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow 9^th October our meeting is at 1.45-3.15. Clive Cooke will be in the spotlight so do please come and support him if you are free.

The talk on October 23^rd  at 8.p.m.will be given by Gary Fisher and will  be The Gunpowder Plot, which has lots of local interest. 

The newsletter will be out in a few days’ time.  It contains the AGM notice with the opportunity to raise questions and also membership renewal forms. The subscription remains at £25.00 and £13.00 for Associate Members.  You can renew on-line also and that is already available. I can take cash or card payments on Tuesdays when I am at the Museum but we still take cash and cheques to cater for all our members.

Steve Waddingham’s talk is on November13th (not as advertised in my last letter!) Sorry about that confusion.

What a wonderful month September has been. I know many of you have taken time away, myself included, and made the most of it. So good to see so many of you and the classics around at the shows too. A big thank you to those who supported our car display at Hatfield House, which was a very relaxing day out.

Sadly member and long time personal friend Colin Tilling died suddenly last week. He was a very skilled man and had taken care of our Rileys for 30 years. Some of you will remember Reg Green. He used to volunteer in the shop, was never a member, but a great supporter until dementia prevented him from continuing. I last saw him pre-covid when he came on a visit.

Our meetings in September have been very poorly attended.

The newsletter has gone to be printed and will be with you soon. Thanks to John and all the contributors.

us a most interesting view of some of his toys collected over 35 years as you can see in the
picture and David and Lesley gave us a whistle stop tour of their ports of call on their
journey of a lifetime. The presentation was very professional with soundtrack as well as
Lesley’s commentary.
October Events:
Monday 9 th Our meeting will take place in the afternoon from 1.45-3.15. It will be a
spotlight on Clive Cooke with tea/coffee and cake. This is to see if we can encourage more
members and their guests to come along in daylight as we know driving in the dark is
getting more problematic for some of our regulars. If it works we will do this for meetings in
January and February.
Monday 23 rd 7.30 We have Steve Waddingham coming to talk to us about Aston Martins.
He comes a long way so do come along if you can. Apologies to those who have work
commitments.
Sunday 29 th Open Day with a second visit of the Old Geezers Hot Rod to the Museum. A
show not to be missed. Please park off-site and enjoy the atmosphere.

I hope that you are enjoying the last few days of summer and the various shows that have been taking place. There is a lot going on at present and I am sure that we will make the most of the opportunities in September. So good to see our vehicles on display around the counties.

Tomorrow we will wake up and find that the ULEZ expansion is real.  Signs and cameras abound although many of the latter have been vandalised. I know some of you are badly affected by this and we have yet to see the effect on the Society, the Museum and the Pageant.

I am sorry to tell you that Dennis Carter passed away earlier this month.  He was a very faithful member of the Society, attending on Mondays and a great campaigner against ULEZ. We shall miss him.

Advance Notice

St Albans Organ Theatre on 12th November arrive for 3.00pm

 We are planning a group visit to the St Albans Organ Theatre for a concert commemorating World War 1 and 11 with items from Last Night of the Proms.  Please see Lesley Heard and book with her £6 a  head by 24th September.

Music at the Museum Night on 25th November starting 7.30pm with live band and DJ; £12 entry.

If you have encountered any good speakers recently or have topics you would like covered please let me know as I will be starting to compile the 2024 programme.

Just a short note as I enjoy a day at sea on the way to The Isle of Mann tomorrow.

Firstly I wish those of you who are going to the Fish and Eels tonight a very happy and enjoyable evening with great food and company.

On 20th August I hope that some of you will be going to the Potters Bar Classic Car Show at Elm Court. I believe some of the Society vehicles may be on display. It is a lovely show with music and refreshments as well as toilets in the main building.

A reminder that ULEZ comes very soon now. Some of you have vehicles affected by this. The boundary is East Lodge Lane and Whitewebbs Road. If your vehicle is impacted and you need to pay the charge, the best way forward is to set up a London Road User Auto pay account with TFL. It will also stop you getting a fine if you forget that a route you are usd to taking is now inside ULEZ.

Motorcycles are also affected. To be compliant bikes must meet Euro 3 declared emissions. Generally bikes after 2007 meet this standard. You can get an emission test at Garfield Motor Company – EN3 4RP.

I do hope that you enjoy the rest of the summer. Society meetings resume on Monday 11th September with a talk from Dennis Voller on vintage toys. He requests that we bring one along if possible.

I hope that you are keeping well and able to enjoy the sun when it shows itself.  At least we are spared watering duties at present. Best wishes to all those who are unwell .There is a thank you card from June on the noticeboard for those who signed her card and contributed to her retirement present.

I draw your attention to the fact that there is no access to the Autojumble for the whole of this month and into September.  Please do not bring any items to sell until further notice.  This is because of the extensive improvement work which is being carried out to the Station buildings.  Restrictions on parking remain in place and we do thank you for your assistance in parking off-site to enable visitors to use the available space over the school holidays.

Thank you to members who supported the Epping Rotary Club Show.  This was a bigger show than last year although expected attendance was down as it coincided with Wimbledon Finals.  We had our 10 cars in place and had a relaxed  afternoon.

Numbers were also down for the Classics in The Courtyard Evening.  I was blissfully unaware that the weather was not good in Enfield as I was enjoying lots of sunshine in Norfolk at the time.  Thanks to those who came and brought their vehicles.

We have had a good response to the meal at the Fish and Eels planned for August 14^th.  I hope you will all have a great time.  Please remember that there is no meeting at the Museum that night and that you go straight there. Thanks to Lesley for her work on this.

ULEZ is going to happen.  I have written again and received an immediate standard response so doubt it was even read. If you do not have a compliant car and will be forced to pay this charge or not come to the Museum.  A number of our Volunteers are affected please let us know if you are. First come first served for the £2.000 scrappage scheme now in place.

Some positive news:

The 45^th Enfield Pageant will take place on the Enfield Playing Fields on May 25^th and 26^th 2024.  The first Committee Meeting will take place on Wednesday 6th September at 7.30 in the Club Room. If you would like to be involved please come along. We are looking for people to cover some key areas. Please contact me if you have expertise in these areas:

·         Sponsorship
·         Shadowing and assisting  Mike Price who organises all the caterers
·         Administration
·         Co-ordinating entertainment for families and children

Society meetings will re-commence on September 11^th.  I will write at the end of the month.
