Letters To Members

I hope that you are keeping well and able to enjoy the sun when it shows itself.  At least we are spared watering duties at present. Best wishes to all those who are unwell .There is a thank you card from June on the noticeboard for those who signed her card and contributed to her retirement present.

I draw your attention to the fact that there is no access to the Autojumble for the whole of this month and into September.  Please do not bring any items to sell until further notice.  This is because of the extensive improvement work which is being carried out to the Station buildings.  Restrictions on parking remain in place and we do thank you for your assistance in parking off-site to enable visitors to use the available space over the school holidays.

Thank you to members who supported the Epping Rotary Club Show.  This was a bigger show than last year although expected attendance was down as it coincided with Wimbledon Finals.  We had our 10 cars in place and had a relaxed  afternoon.

Numbers were down for the Classics in The Courtyard Evening.  I was blissfully unaware that the weather was not good  in Enfield as I was enjoying lots of sunshine in Norfolk at the time.  Thanks to those who came and brought their vehicles.

We have had a good response to the meal at the Fish and Eels planned for August 14^th.  I hope you will all have a great time.  Please remember that there is no meeting at the Museum that night and that you go straight there. Thanks to Lesley for her work on this.

ULEZ is going to happen.  I have written again and received an immediate standard response so doubt it was even read. If you do not have a compliant car and will be forced to pay this charge or not come to the Museum let us know.  A number of our Volunteers are affected. First come first served for the £2.000 scrappage scheme mow in place.

Some positive news:

The 45^th Enfield Pageant will take place on the Enfield Playing Fields on May 25^th and 26^th 2024.  The first Committee Meeting will take place on Wednesday 6th September at 7.30 in the Club Room. If you would like to be involved please come along. We are looking for people to cover some key areas. Please contact me if you have expertise in these areas:

·         Sponsorship

·         Shadowing and assisting  Mike Price who organises all the caterers

·         Administration

·         Co-ordinating entertainment for families and children

Society meetings will re-commence on September 11^th.  I will write at the end of the month.

I look forward to seeing many of you on Saturday at the Waltham Cross Show and hope that more of you will participate in the display at Hatfield House on 10^th September.

Thank you to all who were involved in the running and set up of the Pageant or exhibiting your fine vehicles. I am sure that you have looked at the various video coverage on You tube and Facebook. Just type in- Enfield Pageant of Motoring 2023. A great time was had by all in great weather.

There are lots of events to enjoy with our classics coming up. We have two EDVVS displays planned :

The first is at Epping on July 16th.  This is organised by the Epping Rotary Club and I have reserved 10 spaces for us. The show takes place at Stonnards Lane Ground Stonnards Hill Epping CM16 4QF. There are refreshments available or bring a picnic.  This has to be pre-booked with me with the £5 entry per vehicle, which goes to local charities after expenses. Please book with me by 26th June at the latest.  Cars in place at 11.30.

I already have a good list of people coming to Hatfield House on  September 10th but there is plenty of room.I need to know asap due to the holiday season.  No charge for this event.

Sad  news:

I have to report the passing of three former members: David Ember; Arnold (Arnie) Prayer who had a proper taxi driver’s funeral with about thirty taxis in procession:John Huggett and Bill Waldren, one of our volunteers who did so much to keep the Museum grounds looking super and also Bob Cuneen’s wife Janet.  Our thoughts are with their families at this time. There will be a procession of cars from the Barnet Classic Car Club to which several of us belong and his car will lead them.

Several of our members are quite unwell at present and we wish them all better health.

I hope that you are well and making the most of the sunny spells. A huge thank you to Mike and Lily Pierce for organising such a brilliant weekend away in Norfolk. 17 classic cars and 59 people participated. Also, my thanks to those who came on the Drive-it-Day yesterday to the De Havilland Museum- 11 cars and 17 people.  Unfortunately, the bus would not have been able to navigate the narrow winding lane to the Museum which was disappointing.

I do hope that we will have a good turnout for Rodger Green’s Talk on the Epping and Ongar Railway Museum tonight (23rd April 2023).

May is full of  events including the Coronation and the Pageant, of course.  These means there are no Society meetings during May!

There is the compulsory meeting for all stewards.  This is on SUNDAY 21ST MAY at 10.00 for 10.30.  There is a repeat of this for those who are unable to attend on Monday 22^nd at 8.00pm. 

Our President, Colin Spong will be on air on Wednesday 26^th.  Do tune in to BBC Radio London at 8.50 when he will be talking about the history of the Museum.

The Society meeting on 12^th June will be the debrief from the Pageant and a chance to give your views.

The meeting on June 26^th will have a Trustee from Copped Hall giving us an illustrated talk.  This is another place we should visit.

The Trustees have asked me to inform you that after 15 years of service as the Administrator to the Trust, June Bayer will be retiring at the end of July.  They are keen to appoint a person who has good knowledge of the Museum and therefore  invite expressions of interest  from anyone with relevant skills, who would like further information.  This is a paid part-time position.

March 27th Talk by Jack Mitchell on ‘How Recycling Works’ Jack advises the Government so is an expert. Jack is a volunteer steward with a special interest in bikes. Do come along.

April 10th Bank Holiday No meeting

April 14th-16th Weekend Rally Swaffham, Norfolk

April 23rd Drive-It Day. We shall meet in the Whitewebbs Car Park Beggars Hollow next to the Rose and Crown at 10.00 and leave at 10.30. We will take a country route to the De Havilland Museum. If you do not have a classic come anyway. Friends and family are welcome. The entry fees are: Full price £14.00, Concessions (over 65 and disabled) £10.90 5-16 years £8.00. Please pay your entrance fees on arrival. There is a café for light refreshment. Make your own way around the Museum. (The guided tour is too expensive and there are not enough of us.) Please let me know you are coming.

A very happy St David’s Day.  Despite the cold spell the daffodils are providing that bright herald of spring and the season beginning. A bumper number of Rovers were at the Museum last Sunday to prove it.

Our meeting last Monday was most enjoyable.  Ralph was in great form and his choice of slides featuring amazing inventions of all forms of transported was incredible. A pity there were not more of us to enjoy it.

You will have received your newsletter and the inserts for the Pageant.  Thank you to those who have already offered their help for setting up and stewarding the pageant.  I look forward to many more offers.

Our March events are:

Monday 13^th The first of our ‘In the Spotlight’ features David Draper  This will be dependent on the lift being back in use.  If it is still out of action the evening will feature another well-known Member.

Saturday 27^th Owners ofPre- War, World War 2 and vehicles up to 1950 are welcome to display them.  See attached pre-booking form.  This event has been moved forward in the year.

Monday 27^th  Our speaker will be Jack Mitchell telling and showing us How Recycling Works and will be very informative.

Further ahead a date for your diary is 16^th July when the Epping Rotary Club is again putting on a Classic Car show in Epping.  The Society will be going complete with banner and gazebo which we are about to purchase.

Other matters

Sad news: Colin Glazebrook, a former Society and Trust chairman passed away last month after a very long illness.  He is regarded as the founder of the pageant.  Have a look at his 1936 Morris Commercial Cross and Blackwell when you are next at the Museum.  The funeral will be private.  Colin Spong will represent us all.

We now have car window stickers obtainable from me at meetings or on Tuesdays at the Museum.  A limited edition at present.  £1.50 each.

ULEZ: The Museum will be greatly affected by this expansion.  Many of our visitors come from outside the M.25 particularly from Hertfordshire and Essex. This will result in loss of vital income.  We are aware that we are only just included in the Zone and that the Crews Hill Area has good quality of air.  What can we do?  Contact the Mayor of London advising him of the damage it will do to this treasure. You can contact him on mayor@london.gov.uk.

Monday 13^th we have Professor Paul Griffin who is giving us an illustrated talk entitled ‘Historic Cars- When is the history not the whole story?) so do please come and find out.

Tuesday 14^th is half term so unless in a classic vehicle, please park off-site as we hope to be very busy .

Saturday 25^th at 7.30pm is the Big Rock’n’Roll Party at the Museum.  Tickets available on the door £10.

Sunday 26^th is an Open Day with the Rover Car Club attending.

Monday 27^th we have the incorrigible Ralph Hutchings with a talk called: ‘Back to the Drawing Board’.

Newsletters will be with you in a few days’ time.  They include Pageant entry forms for the EDVVS area and also the all- important steward information sheet.  If you have elected for pdf newsletter these will all be sent electronically.

A short month but plenty going on.

Dear Members

The recent weather has played havoc with our roads and we all need to take care to avoid the potholes of varying sizes and depths which are around.  Be especially careful if you are on a motorbike or a cycle.  There is even one in my road and plenty on the Ridgeway and in Potters Bar.

Good news.  We now have a live website. This has been designed by one of our members. We have so many talented members. Please take a look at htpps://edvvs.org  There is a members’ area which is for members only.  It is password protected.

Here are some dates to be aware of:

23^rd January- John Harrison will be talking about The Hurtigruten Cruise along the coast of Norway: the sights he saw, some of the ships seen, showing us the classic cars he spotted and no doubt telling us about Norwegian numberplates.

27^th January –is the deadline for newsletter articles to John (john@theharrisonfamily.org.uk) please.

28^th January– There is a demonstration against the ULEZ expansion in Trafalgar Square.  It is a good time to lobby MPs and sign every petition against this if you haven’t done so already.

Membership Renewals If you intended to renew but haven’t please do so now.  Anyone who requires a card pass can request one for collection from the Museum or by post. 13^th February – Paul Griffin will be giving a talk ‘Historic Cars -When is the history not the whole story?’

Many of you met Paul when he loaned us the Stirling Moss Racing Cars last year.

Saturday 25^th February – Big Rock’n’Roll Party 7.30pm  with DJ ‘Big Paul’ Tickets £10 on the door or from Eventbrite online.  Tell your friends. It is a fundraise for the Museum.

Dear Members

Firstly a thank you to those of you who sent me Christmas cards and also to those who sent them to the Society collectively and best wishes to everyone for good health and a happy 2023.

Also a huge thankyou to the vast majority of members who have renewed their Membership.  It has been difficult with the postal strikes and the gap in meetings.  If you still have to do this please do so on Monday night or Tuesday at the Museum.

Two rooms have become available for the Weekend Rally to Swaffham, Norfolk which takes place on April 14^th-16^th at £200 per person.  If you ae interested and would like more information please contact Mike on 07801609941. These weekends are great fun and include places of interest to visit.

Do we have any registered electricians among our number?  We need such a person with the correct equipment and experience to check out and test the use of the generators we will be using at the Pageant.  Need to be available 26^th, 27^th, 28^th May.  Please contact Judith or Keith if you can help or know of someone we can approach.

October seems to have been one of the busiest months at the Museum and I think November will be pretty busy too as we build up to Christmas.

If you are coming to the Museum during this wet period, please be advised that the flooding in Whitewebbs Road is really severe at present.  Certainly not the time to be in a classic or low vehicle.  It is worse from the Crews Hill entry so please take great care and maybe avoid approaching from that direction.

Thank you to those of you have already paid your subs renewal.  Please keep them coming.

Some reminders about November:

14^th November will be an illustrated talk by Colin Spong

14^th November is the last date for bookings and deposits for the Carvery meal at the Woodman on the 23^rd November at 6.45 for 7.00pm Postal code is AL9 7TT. There are currently 35 going so it should be a good evening.

28th November is the AGM and any proposals/questions/committee nominations must reach the Museum by the 17^th November. Members must check in with the membership secretary and should have membership cards to hand (or on your phone). I hope we will have a good attendance.  This is your chance to hear reports about the work of the Trustees and the Museum finances.

I know that several members are poorly at present and wish them a speedy recovery.  Unfortunately, Eleanor is currently in hospital and we hope that she will soon be out. She continues to be her positive self.
